The market for contemporary Nigerian art has exploded. Nike Art Gallery — five floors, 8,000+ works. Omenka Gallery, Rele Gallery, and Ko represent the professionalized gallery sector. Art X Lagos functions as the commercial anchor.
Key Players
Ben Enwonwu — "Tutu" sold for 1.2 million pounds. Njideka Akunyili Crosby makes collage paintings selling for millions. Emeka Ogboh makes installations from Lagos soundscapes. Yinka Shonibare uses Dutch wax print to interrogate colonial identity.
History & DNA
Nigerian art spans millennia — Nok terracotta (500 BC), Ife bronze heads (12th century), Benin bronzes. Modern art emerged through the Zaria Art Society in the 1950s. The Mbari clubs of the 1960s created independent art spaces.
