1900Rugrat comes out of the Jersey drill scene — the mutation that took the UK drill template, ran it through jersey club's kick patterns, and gave it back as a regionally specific sound that is now one of the fastest-spreading genres on American streaming. Jersey drill is a useful case study in how genres form now. It did not emerge from industry A&R rooms or magazine trend pieces. It emerged from a specific geographic cluster of kids who had access to club-tempo samples, the jersey club 4x4 bounce, and the sharp flows that were already dominating drill in New York and London. They combined what they had. They put it on YouTube and TikTok. The sound moved. What the scene still has going for it is that the gatekeeping is thin. The barrier to entry is a laptop and a camera. The barrier to breaking out is a song good enough to get clipped. This is one of the fairer music economies operating in America right now, even with all its churn. Nonesuch indexes these artists because the regional American underground is, right now, more interesting than any major-label rollout, and better documented by teenagers on TikTok than by any established critic.
