Key Works

The College Dropout (2004) — The thesis statement. Soul samples stitched together with skits about the American education scam. "All Falls Down" was a mirror held up to consumer culture by someone who loved consumer culture. The contradiction was the whole point.

My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy (2010) — Maximalism as autobiography. Every song sounds like it cost a million dollars because most of them did. "Runaway" is a nine-minute apology that never actually apologizes. The George Condo artwork. The 35-minute film. This was the moment the album became a total artwork again.

808s & Heartbreak (2008) — The most influential album of the 2010s, released in 2008. Drake, Kid Cudi, The Weeknd, Travis Scott, Juice WRLD — every one of them exists in its wake. Recorded after a death and a breakup. The stripped-down production and naked vocal processing created a new emotional vocabulary for hip-hop.
